Tire Height Calculator

Boss Hog Drivetrain Tools

Know Your Tire Diameter Before You Change the Drivetrain

Tire height affects more than appearance. It changes effective gearing, cruising RPM, acceleration, transmission behavior and torque converter performance.

Use the Boss Hog Tire Height Calculator to estimate overall tire diameter from your tire size, then use that number when calculating gearing, RPM or choosing a torque converter.

Enter Your Tire Size

Enter the tire width, aspect ratio and wheel diameter shown on the sidewall of your tire.

For example, a 275/60R15 tire uses:

275 = Section Width • 60 = Aspect Ratio • 15 = Wheel Diameter

Don't know the exact tire height? That's exactly what this calculator is for.

Calculate a tire’s overall diameter from its size. For a size like 275/60R15, enter width 275, aspect ratio 60 and wheel diameter 15.

Choosing a Torque Converter Too?

Don't leave tire diameter out of the conversation.

Why Tire Height Matters

A tire is part of the drivetrain's overall mechanical ratio. Changing tire diameter can alter how the vehicle feels even when the transmission and rear gear stay exactly the same.

Moving to a taller tire effectively makes the gearing taller. Moving to a shorter tire effectively makes the gearing shorter.

Same rear gear. Different tire diameter. Different effective gearing.

What Changes When Tire Diameter Changes?

Effective Gear Ratio

Taller tires reduce the effective numerical gearing seen by the drivetrain. Shorter tires increase it. This can noticeably change how quickly the vehicle accelerates.

Engine RPM

A taller tire generally lowers engine RPM at a given road speed. A shorter tire generally raises it.

Acceleration

If tire diameter increases without a corresponding gear change, the vehicle may feel less responsive because the drivetrain is effectively working through taller gearing.

Transmission Behavior

Tire-size changes can affect how the vehicle loads the transmission, how it shifts and how well the total drivetrain combination works together.

Towing

Larger tires can reduce effective gearing and make a heavy vehicle work harder under load. This is especially important on trucks used for towing.

Torque Converter Behavior

Tire diameter is one of the vehicle variables that should be considered when selecting a performance torque converter and stall range.

Taller Tires Can Make Your Gear Ratio Feel Taller Too

Imagine two otherwise identical vehicles using the same transmission and the same 3.73 rear gear.

Vehicle A: 26-Inch Tire

The shorter tire creates a more aggressive effective gearing relationship and generally increases engine RPM at a given road speed.

Vehicle B: 33-Inch Tire

The taller tire effectively reduces the gearing and generally lowers engine RPM at the same road speed.

The Rear Gear Didn't Change. The Drivetrain Did.

That's why simply saying “I have 3.73 gears” doesn't give the full picture. Tire diameter belongs in the calculation too.

Larger Tires on a Truck?

This is one of the most important uses for this calculator.

Moving from a factory tire to a significantly taller tire can affect:

Low-Speed Response • Towing • Shift Behavior • Cruising RPM • Effective Gear Ratio • Converter Load

Boss Hog notes on current converter applications that gearing needs to match the vehicle setup and that taller tires can create a need for additional gearing. That makes tire diameter an important part of converter selection.

Street, Strip, Truck or Race?

Street

Use tire height to understand cruising RPM, gearing and everyday drivability.

Street / Strip

Consider tire diameter together with rear gearing, converter stall and the engine's usable power range.

Truck / Towing

Larger tires can effectively reduce gearing and place additional load on the drivetrain.

Racing

Tire diameter is an important variable when evaluating gearing, finish-line RPM and converter behavior.

How Tire Size Is Written

Most modern radial tire sizes use a format similar to 275/60R15 .

275 — Section Width

The approximate width of the tire in millimeters.

60 — Aspect Ratio

The sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tire's section width.

R — Radial Construction

Indicates radial tire construction.

15 — Wheel Diameter

The diameter of the wheel, measured in inches.

The calculator converts those measurements into an estimated overall tire diameter.

Calculated Height vs. Actual Tire Height

A tire-size calculation gives you a useful nominal diameter, but actual mounted tire height can vary slightly by manufacturer, tread design, wheel width, inflation pressure, vehicle load and production tolerances.

For drivetrain planning, the calculated number is an excellent starting point. For the most precise result, compare it with the tire manufacturer's published specifications or physically measure the mounted tire.

Calculator for planning. Actual measurement for precision.
