BOSS HOG LEARNING CENTER
A turbo LS converter has to do more than hit a target stall RPM. It must help the engine reach the range where the turbo can respond while controlling heat, slip, and drivability for the way the vehicle is actually used.
Turbo Size Changes Converter Needs
A larger turbo may require more engine speed and load before it responds strongly, while a smaller turbo may come on sooner. Converter characteristics should complement the turbo rather than work against it.
Engine Displacement and Torque
A 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 408-cubic-inch LS can all produce different torque curves with the same turbo. More torque can change how the converter flashes and couples.
Camshaft and Powerband
Turbo camshaft selection affects where the engine makes useful power. The converter should allow the engine to reach that range without being unnecessarily loose everywhere else.
Vehicle Weight and Gearing
A heavier vehicle loads the converter differently than a light car. Rear gear and tire diameter also influence how quickly the engine and turbo respond.
Street vs. Drag Racing
Street cars usually need better part-throttle manners and heat control. Drag-oriented builds may prioritize spool, launch RPM, 60-foot performance, and consistency.
Trans Brake and Launch Strategy
If the vehicle uses a trans brake, two-step, or boost-building strategy, converter selection becomes even more application-specific. The converter, turbo, engine, and launch control should be treated as a system.
Do Not Copy Someone Else’s Stall Number
Two turbo LS cars with similar horsepower can still need different converters because of turbo size, engine size, vehicle weight, gearing, and use.
Use the complete vehicle combination. Engine torque, camshaft, transmission, vehicle weight, rear gearing, tire diameter, power adders, and intended use can all change how a converter behaves.
