Boss Hog Learning Center
The best towing converter is not necessarily the lowest-stall converter available. Towing places sustained load on the drivetrain, so converter selection should focus on torque, gearing, heat control, lockup behavior, and how the truck is actually used.
Start With Towing Weight
Know the vehicle weight, trailer weight, cargo, and how often the truck tows. A lightly loaded weekend tow vehicle and a heavy-use tow rig have different demands.
Engine Torque Curve
A towing converter should complement where the engine makes useful torque. Diesel, big-block gasoline, and modified small-block engines can all require different characteristics.
Rear Gear and Tire Size
Larger tires effectively reduce gearing. If a truck has oversized tires without enough axle gear, the converter and transmission may work harder under load.
Lockup Matters
A properly functioning lockup clutch can reduce converter slip and temperature during steady cruising when conditions allow.
Heat Control
Towing creates heat. Transmission cooling, fluid condition, converter slip, gearing, and vehicle load should all be considered together.
Do Not Overlook Modifications
Tuners, larger tires, engine upgrades, turbo changes, and gear swaps can all affect the converter requirement.
Street Manners Still Matter
A tow vehicle still spends much of its life driving unloaded. The converter should work well in both towing and everyday conditions.
Use the complete vehicle combination. Engine torque, camshaft, transmission, vehicle weight, rear gearing, tire diameter, power adders, and intended use can all change how a converter behaves.
